It is 2017, finally. Last year was rough for many people. Several beloved actors and musicians passed away during the year. And many of you may have also had family or friends pass away as well. As we think about the New Year and what it brings, let us suggest three New Year's resolutions for military veterans that are searching for good year-long goals.
Health
As military veterans, being healthy has always been an important part of your life. Yet, it is common that as the years pass, many veterans forget their former military fitness routines. Aging impacts us all, but it doesn’t have to be quite so brutal if we take care of ourselves. Remember back to your basic training days and make a resolution to start a healthy routine. You don’t need to do 1000 burpees in the blazing hot sun, but rather, start small. Vow to make your health and your fitness a priority again. Remember why you served our great nation, and the pride you took in being able to fight for our country. It is hard to fight when you are ill, overweight or not following a healthy and active lifestyle. Again, set a small realistic goal. Even if it is just to start walking 15 minutes a day. Do it for yourself.
Wealth
Taking care of your body is one part of the equation, taking care of your wallet is another part. Not everyone has the luxury or ability to save money, but there are a few things you can do to make your dollar go farther. Clipping coupons is an easy way to save your hard earned cash. Many folks do not realize that coupons are everywhere, beyond the daily newspaper, coupons can be looked up online and applied to nearly every type of purchase. Websites like Retailmenot.com and overstock.com offer amazing discounts to anyone with the time to search for a particular good or service. Spending a few minutes to lookup coupons online can literally save you thousands of dollars a year. Take that extra time and your wallet will thank you.

Happiness
This should be an easy one, but for many it is not. For veterans suffering from PTSD, finding happiness can often be extremely challenging. But, this year, let’s all resolve to help one another find happiness. If you or your veteran are suffering from loss or mental health issues, get help or help them get the help they need. Every day is precious and there is no time like the present to get mentally fit and happier. Happiness can also be had by bringing joy to others. If you know someone that needs a little extra kindness, help them out. Extending a helping hand makes the world a better place and brings happiness to the heart.
For all of us here at Veteranaid.org, have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
